Need Patients Fast? Get Out From Behind Your Desk

One of the questions we hear most from providers who've just opened their doors is some version of: how do I get patients in fast? It's a fair question. You've put real time, money, and energy into launching your practice, and an empty schedule is stressful in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't lived it.

There's no shortage of marketing advice out there — a website, social media, paid ads, email campaigns. All of it has a place, and all of it takes time to pay off. If you need momentum now, the fastest thing you can do is also the simplest, and it's free: get out of the office and introduce yourself to people.

Opening the Doors Isn't Enough

It's easy to assume that a great office, a solid website, and a strong clinical background will speak for themselves. They don't — not on their own. None of it helps if the people in your community simply don't know you exist yet. Your first job as a new practice isn't to convince anyone to choose you. It's just to make sure people know you're there and open for business. That means introducing yourself, rather than waiting to be discovered.

Start With Other Providers

One of the easiest places to begin is with the other healthcare offices already near you — physicians, specialists, therapists, pharmacists, chiropractors, urgent care centers, home health agencies. Many of them regularly see patients they can't accommodate: long wait times, insurance mismatches, or simply not accepting new patients.

Stop by, introduce yourself, and explain what your practice does and who it serves. You don't need a polished pitch — a short, direct conversation works better than a formal presentation: "I recently opened a practice nearby. We're accepting new patients for [services]. If you ever have patients who need this and can't fit them in, we'd be glad to see them." Leave a card or a simple one-pager. The goal isn't to pressure anyone for referrals — it's just to make sure they know you're an option.

Don't Overlook the Local ER

Depending on your specialty, the local emergency department or hospital can be another good place to introduce yourself. ERs frequently discharge patients who need follow-up care or a primary care provider and don't have one lined up. Find whoever handles discharge planning, case management, or community referrals, and let them know your practice is accepting patients who need appropriate outpatient follow-up. Again — you're not asking for a guarantee, just making yourself a known, available option.

Show Up Where the Community Already Gathers

This one takes longer to pay off, but it's worth doing. Healthcare doesn't only happen in medical offices — it happens in the places people already spend their time: senior centers, churches, schools, gyms, employers, chambers of commerce, support groups, local nonprofits.

Offer to speak on a health topic relevant to that audience. Show up to community health events. Volunteer. None of this produces patients overnight, but it builds familiarity — and familiarity is exactly what someone remembers the next time they, or someone they know, needs care.

Be Specific About Who You Help

"I just opened a new clinic" doesn't give anyone enough to work with. Be specific about who you serve: "We're taking new adult primary care patients." "We work with women navigating menopause who want ongoing support." "We see patients who are struggling to get a timely appointment elsewhere." The clearer you are, the easier it is for someone to actually think of you when the right patient comes along. People can't refer patients to a practice they don't understand.

Where EMS Fits In

This kind of grassroots introduction gets easier when you're not doing it entirely alone. At Elite Medical Suites, you're already sharing a building with a genuinely diverse group of independent providers — physicians, NPs, therapists, chiropractors, wellness specialists, and more. That's a built-in, low-effort version of the same strategy: cross-specialty referrals happen naturally when you actually know the providers down the hall, and our shared common areas make those introductions easy instead of awkward.

And if the administrative side of getting the word out — scheduling community talks, following up with referral contacts, managing your inbox while you're out meeting people — is what's holding you back from doing this consistently, that's exactly the kind of work an EMS Virtual Assistant can take off your plate.

The fastest marketing strategy for a new practice rarely involves a complicated funnel or a big ad spend. Most days, it's comfortable shoes, a stack of business cards, and a few honest conversations.
